Designer Spotlight: Issey Miyake

Updated: Mar 31, 2019

Few in the fashion world have managed to blend high fashion, technology and futuristic design as expertly as Japanese innovator Issey Miyake.

His bold aesthetic exudes a passion for diverse, unhindered creativity. His designs seem to shift and flow as if they have a life of their own.

Miyake has managed to make a splash across a variety of industries, producing renowned products in categories ranging from luxury handbags, wristwatches, perfumes and sculptures.

Born in Hiroshima Japan, Miyake graduated from Tama Art University in Tokyo in 1964 with a degree in graphic design.

Now 79 years old, he has garnered international acclaim for his innovative designs from New York to Paris.

Much of Miyake's work centers on flexibility, movement and vibrant color palettes. He is known for his revolutionary method of pleating, where he layers fabrics and paper before applying a heat press to produce a shape-shifting aesthetic.

He integrates unique plastic panels and meshes that effortlessly adapt to whichever form-fitting design is necessary.

His line of high-quality Bao Bao handbags are a great example of his exceptional engineering ability.

Miyake's epic career has spanned over 40 years, and he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon.

We can't wait to see what innovations he has up his sleeve in the near future!
